Andrew Lloyd Webber 's Requiem is a requiem masswhich premiered in He does not set the Agnus Dei separately, but rather combined the text of Pie Jesu, a motet derived from the final couplet of the usual Dies iraewith that of the Agnus Dei, commonly heard later in the standard Requiem Mass. The music mixes Lloyd Webber's melodic and pop-oriented style with more complex, sophisticated, and at times even austere forms. Domingo is in excellent voice, Brightman copes uncomplainingly with the cruelly wide tessitura her husband calls for, the boy soloist is properly angelical in the Faure-ish pages; chorus, orchestra, conductor and recording engineers approach each highly-coloured climax with unflagging energy.

One expects this to happen in the tunes themselves—he has achieved his success, after all, by imprinting melodies on the memory—but alas the tunes here are all short-breathed, often starting out promisingly but petering out after a bar or so, and scarcely any of them are memorable.
A Dies irae in that public style, with its rhythmic exuberance and its vernacular directness, its brashness, even, could have been dramatically appropriate, even vitally urgent; it could scarcely have been less so than the impoverished all-purpose agitato of this setting, Carl Orff minus his pile-driving impetus alongside a bloodless shadow of Puccini.
